An unknown person shot Officer Thomas Schwartz in the upper right shoulder, rendering him hors de combat, at 2 AM on Wednesday while he was on patrol at Joe's Sports Bar on Manchester Boulevard, according to Michael Chen, the head police commissioner for the Philadelphia Police Department.
According to Chen, the scene was the modern equivalent of a shootout from Clint Eastwood's 1992 landmark Western,
Unforgiven, with
rolling gunfire spill[ing] out onto three blocks.
The police department has also recovered two 9mm handguns from the scene, but they have found only casings of the bullets. Chen states that they have not yet dusted the guns for fingerprints.
